What is Breakdown Cover?

Breakdown cover is there to help you if your car or motocycle breaks down. It means you can call for help and we will send one of our Recovery Operators to attempt a fix at your location. If this is not possible, we will recover you to a nearby garage.

We offer breakdown cover for all types of cars and motorcycles, including electric and hybrid vehicles.

There are four levels of cover to cover you and your family and keep you moving.

Our Breakdown Cover Services

There are a few different levels to choose from, so it’s important to understand how they differ so you can pick the right option for you:

Local Breakdown Cover

If your vehicle breaks down more than one mile from your home, we’ll provide roadside assistance to repair it at the roadside.

Can’t be repaired? We can take you and up to six passengers to a destination within a 20-mile radius.

Nationwide Breakdown Cover

If you breakdown by the side of the road, we will deploy one of our nationwide recovery operators who will attempt to fix your vehicle at the roadside, and if we can’t, we will take your vehicle to the nearest garage.

If they’re unable to repair your vehicle, one of the following solutions will be offered:

1: Nationwide Recovery – Driver and up to 6 passengers recovered to home or original destination.

2: Overnight accommodation – one night only.

3: 24 hour free UK hire vehicle.

Nationwide and Homestart

The nationwide and home start breakdown cover is our most comprehensive UK cover, which contains all the benefits of Local and  Nationwide, plus assistance at your home address or within a mile of your home.

Nationwide, Homestart & European Breakdown

With our annual European breakdown cover, be sure you’ll be protected when driving in Europe.

Who are your breakdown policies underwritten by?

What do I do if I've broken down?

Also please ensure you have your home postcode, breakdown policy number, vehicle details and registration number available

How do I cancel my policy?

How do I renew my policy?

To ensure your vehicle is continuously covered for a breakdown we also operate an Auto Renewal feature where we will email you 21 days prior to your policy renewal and automatically renew your policy unless you opt not to. You can cancel this feature for free at anytime by contacting our Customer Service team on 0330 057 3223 (M-F 9am to 5pm)

What do I do if I'm not happy?

To make a general complaint about your policy or our service

To make a complaint about the breakdown

You can contact us via 01737 815 023 or quality.assurance@axa-assistance.co.uk. We’re available Monday – Friday between 9am and 5pm. (Excluding bank holidays).

What if I’m not happy with your response to my complaint?

If you’re not satisfied with how we’ve resolved your complaint, you may be eligible to refer your case to the Financial Ombudsman Service for independent review.

You have six months from the date of our final response to refer your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service and this doesn’t affect your right to take legal action.

You offer a breakdown policy with a Voluntary Excess – what does this mean?

We offer cover with or without a voluntary excess, which is an amount you will pay every time you make a claim and request assistance under the policy.

Choosing to add the excess will reduce the price of your policy but means you will pay £30 every time you breakdown before assistance is provided.  If you do not add the excess the price of the policy will be higher but you will NOT pay any fixed contribution when you need assistance.

Payment will be taken by Credit or Debit card (apart from American Express) at the point you request assistance, if you are covered.
